PLAN IT OUT.
Is it possible to wing it? Of course it is. I’m not proud to admit it, but I’ve done it a few times in my career to varying results. Sometimes the spontaneity can be fresh and exciting, but more often it will lead to a less-than-focussed exhibition of the ideas and content that you and your team have spent tireless hours working on. For that reason (and many others) it’s better to devise a solid plan and stick to it.
SHARE THE RESPONSIBILITIES.
Most teams can identify their strongest presenter and will want to rely on them to WOW the client, but it’s good to encourage the rest of your colleagues to pitch in and share their expertise. The change of pace not only makes the presentation more interesting, it also demonstrates to the client that they have a full squad of professionals at their disposal. This also gives some of your newer associates the opportunity to develop their voices, so mix it up.
CHARTS! GRAPHS! COLOR-CODED BINDERS!
What you show is just as important as what you say. Having great creative at your ‘creative’ presentation is obviously a must, but don’t forget to share a few informative graphics that help everyone understand how this will all translate into successful results. After all, pretty pictures and no results are only successful at winning ad industry awards;)
BRING THE ENERGY!
Over the years, I have found that failing to do this can be the easiest way to sink what otherwise would have been a slam dunk presentation. Your client has likely been waiting for this unveiling. In a world of endless conference calls and statistical reviews, this may be the thing they have been looking forward to all week. So don’t squander that enthusiasm by showing up with anything less than your A-game. Don’t be a Donnie.
Just like in baseball – you gotta have a closer. In many cases that is also your starter. Either way it’s important to take this opportunity to connect all the dots that your team has laid out and to clearly remind the audience that you have a plan for their future SUCCESS!
